Broadway, Boogie-Woogie is the last finished painting from Mondrian, who came to New York in 1940 to escape WWII in Europe and completely fell in love with the city and with boogie-woogie music. Although he spent most of his career creating abstract work, this painting is inspired by clear real-world examples: the city grid of Manhattan with its intersections and yellow cabs. The squared lines seem to bounce against each other and these tiny, blinking blocks of color create a vital and pulsing rhythm and an optical vibration that jumps from intersection to intersection like traffic on the streets.
