A modern take on Paul Cézanne's masterpiece The Large Bathers (1898–1905), these seamless socks mimic the artist's color scheme and include compositional elements so that they give the impression of the original work without being too obvious.
Cézanne's style of clumsy originality granted him a lifetime of harsh critic from most of his early 20th century contemporaries, who regarded his work as crude. Yet, Large Bathers has influenced the representation of the nude more than any other painting since the Renaissance. In stark contrast with the highly eroticized 16th-century depictions, Cézanne redefined the aesthetics of what was permissible in the representation of the human figure. Rooted in a (perhaps surprisingly) complex technique, the apparent lack of polishment or outright "ugliness" of this work, sparked discussion in the halls of early 20th century progressive painting and has become a trait of modern painting, influencing a number of very different styles, including Fauvism and Cubism, geometric and organic abstraction.
