Initially a watercolorist, Frances Hammell Gearhart (American, 1869-1958) taught herself woodblock printing following the landmark Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. She became a member of the influential printmaking societies of the day and was rooted in the Arts and Crafts movement. Gearhart is known today for her dramatic landscapes that celebrate the wild terrain of California.
