Kazuyuki Ohtsu’s (Japanese, 1935 - ) tranquil landscapes of the Japanese countryside come alive with crystalline color and fine detail. The woodblock prints feature neatly tilled fields, cherry trees in bloom, and manicured gardens. Buildings and cats may appear as well, but people rarely do. After serving as a printmaker’s assistant for forty years, Ohtsu began his own artistic career at age sixty-two. Working in the s?saku hanga (creative prints) tradition, he handles every step of the process: painting the original pictures, carving the woodblocks, and printing the images. Twelve of Ohtsu’s harmonious artworks, reflecting the changing seasons, are reproduced in this calendar. More than fifty of his prints can be found in the book Kazuyuki Ohtsu (Pomegranate, 2016).
Printed with soy-based inks on FSC® certified paper, the paper used in this calendar has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® and manufactured by an FSC certified printer.
