Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) painted the irises in 1889, during his yearlong stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. In this cropped composition, which was likely influenced by Japanese prints, a single white iris is prominent. Van Gogh's brother Theo wrote of the work: "[It] strikes the eye from afar. It is a beautiful study full of air and life."
