Created by local artist Adam Egenolf, this handmade ceramic Indiana ornament is glazed with a crystalline glaze. Crystalline glaze is a process of creating or growing a crystal in the glaze during the kiln firing process. The flower shapes you see on the state are crystals that were grown in the kiln. Growing crystals in the glazes with the use of different oxides as well as rare earth metals allows Egenolf to manipulate the clay surface to look organic and alive. The crystals grow randomly so this truly makes each ornament one of a kind!
Adam Egenolf is a full-time crystalline ceramicist. He received his BA in studio art from the University of Southern Indiana and MFA in Ceramics from Eastern Carolina University. He currently works out of Nineveh, Indiana.
