About the Artist:
Mary Napangardi Brown (b. 1953) is a Warlpiri woman from Mandarine, located southwest of Yuendumu in Central Australia. Growing up in a traditional lifestyle, she learned about bush tucker, bush medicine, and the cultural knowledge and Dreaming stories of her people. After her family was relocated to Yuendumu, she later moved to Mount Liebig and Nyirripi. Mary began painting in the early 1990s and became a full-time artist in 2005 when she started working with Warlukurlangu Artists. Her art primarily focuses on women’s ceremonies and Dreaming stories passed down through generations, using traditional iconography and symbols. She portrays the sacred journeys of the Tingari women, with landscapes and ceremonial elements from her land. Mary is part of a talented family of artists, including her sisters Jeannie, Margaret, and niece Joy. Her works are an important reflection of her cultural heritage and the stories of her ancestors.
