About the Artist:

Simplicia Tipungwuti, born in 1979 on Bathurst Island, is an Aboriginal Australian artist who joined the Munupi Art Centre in 2019. After moving to Pirlangimpi at the age of 13, she has lived there ever since with her partner and their five children. Her mother-in-law, Virginia Galarla, is also a painter at the Art Centre, fostering a strong family connection to the arts. Simplicia is known for her intricate, large-scale paintings that often depict stories tied to her culture, particularly focusing on the connection between humans, animals, and the land. Her work reflects traditional themes, such as the journeys of people seeking food and water and their interactions with animals, bringing to life the rich Dreaming stories of her community. Through her art, Simplicia honors her heritage while conveying the deep cultural narratives of the Tiwi Islands.
