About the Artist:
Daphne Napurrula Marks, born in 1979 in Alice Springs, is a dedicated artist and educator based in Haasts Bluff in the Northern Territory. Raised by her grandmother, the renowned painter Narputta Nangala Jugadai, Daphne was immersed in the rich storytelling and painting traditions of the Ikuntji Artists from a young age. She creates intricate, vibrant works that depict the Yalka Tjukurrpa (Bush Onion Dreaming), a story passed down to her by her grandmother, whose ancestral ties to Karrkurutinytja (Lake Macdonald) gave her the right to paint it. Daphne’s work is known for its fine detail and dynamic representation of the desert landscape, particularly after the rains, when the bush onions and wildflowers reappear in abundance. As one of the youngest artists to join Ikuntji Art Centre, Daphne’s paintings reflect both deep cultural knowledge and a contemporary interpretation of Country.
