Black & White Seven Sisters Throw Blanket

$ 84.00

This cotton throw by Nelly Patterson depicts the Seven Sisters Tjukurpa, a significant Indigenous Australian creation story. The tale follows Wati Nyiru, a man who chases the Seven Sisters across Australia in an attempt to marry the eldest. The sisters, from Whyalla to Canberra, try to escape his relentless pursuit, with the eldest sister signaling her awareness of his approach. This artwork illustrates the places where the sisters camped during their journey, offering a vivid connection to this cultural narrative. The throw’s black and white design adds a modern touch to the storytelling, making it both a visually striking and culturally significant addition to any home.

About the Artist:

Nelly Nungarrayi Patterson is a Senior Anangu and Lore woman, born in the 1930s in northern South Australia. Raised in the outback before roads or white settlement reached her homelands, Nelly walked vast distances as a child, traveling from Pipalyatjara to Amata and Omatja, near Kata Tjuta, to visit family. A custodian of sacred stories, Nelly has been dedicated to preserving Anangu culture and law, particularly Tjukurpa, the ancient lore passed down through song, stories, ceremonies, and dance. Painting since 1986, Nelly focuses on depicting Malu and the Seven Sisters Tjukurpa, along with the sacred Dreaming stories of Atila, Uluru, and Kata Tjuta. Her work has been widely exhibited, and she continues to share her cultural knowledge through her art, painting with Walkatjara Arts and Maruku at Uluru.
