About the Artist:
Coral Hayes [Hughes] was born in Balranald, NSW, and is a descendant of the Yorta Yorta people from the Mooroopna/Shepparton region of Victoria. Her totem is the long-neck turtle, which she shares with her mother, Kitty Smith Murray, and her grandmother. She is also a descendant of the central Arunta people of Alice Springs, where her totem is the eagle, Ertija, belonging to her grandmother Julie Hughes. Coral takes pride in honoring this lineage as a tribute to her ancestors. Her father, Billy Hughes, carried the green caterpillar Yeperenye as his totem, of which he was very proud. Today, Coral paints with deep respect for all of her ancestors, who are now in the Dreaming.
