Kwame Brathwaite: Black Is Beautiful

$ 45.00

Kwame Brathwaite: Black Is Beautiful explores the groundbreaking career of photographer Kwame Brathwaite and his influential role in popularizing the “Black Is Beautiful” movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The first monograph dedicated to Brathwaite’s career, this richly illustrated book traces his work with the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) and the Grandassa Models, a pioneering modeling troupe founded to celebrate Black identity and challenge prevailing beauty standards. Featuring striking portraits alongside photographs of Harlem’s vibrant artistic community, including Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Miles Davis, this book illuminates Brathwaite’s lasting influence on Black art, photography, fashion, music, and the cultural legacy of the second Harlem Renaissance.
