About the Artist:
Born in the 1940s at Ngarurr soak in the Western Desert, May Mayiwalku (May Wokka) Chapman is a Manyjilyjarra woman and one of the founding members of Martumili Artists. She is the eldest sister of fellow artists Nancy Nyanjilpayi Chapman, Mulyatingki Marney, and Marjorie Yates (dec.). Raised in a traditional nomadic lifestyle, she travelled across her family’s Country—Punmu, Kunawarritji, and Karlamilyi—before moving to Jigalong Mission in 1966 after a severe drought. Now based in Warralong, where she paints alongside her daughter Doreen Chapman, May is known for her technically refined works that depict ngurra (home Country), including its animals, plants, waterholes, and associated Jukurrpa (Dreaming) stories. Her work has been widely exhibited and is held in major collections such as the National Museum of Australia.
