About the Artist:

Betsy Napangardi Lewis (c. 1940–2008) was a prominent Warlpiri artist known for her unique and abstract depictions of her cultural stories. Born at Kunajarryi, west of Yuendumu, she moved to Mount Doreen Station in her youth and later spent much of her life in Yuendumu and Nyirripi. A strong, yet caring woman, Betsy began painting in the 1990s and transitioned to full-time art in 1999, working with Warlukurlangu Artists. Her paintings, characterized by vibrant colors and dynamic movement, represent the sacred journeys of ancestral women, particularly the Mina Mina Dreaming. Betsy’s works explore both traditional themes and innovative techniques, and she exhibited extensively across Australia, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the key figures in contemporary Aboriginal art before her passing in 2008.
