Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) invested his paintings with fearless color and singular eloquence. His portraits, landscapes, and still life’s transform the familiar into the exceptional, each one a masterful expression of the painter’s passion. Between 1880 and 1890, his entire career in art, van Gogh created more than two thousand drawings and paintings, extraordinary depictions of such ordinary subjects as chairs, books, boats, boots, fields, flowers, and farmers. Although commercial success eluded him during his brief lifetime, his timeless paintings serve as testaments to van Gogh’s brilliance. 

Vincent van Gogh sought refuge from Paris in February 1888. He set off for Arles to satisfy his yearning to experience the colors of the South. Initially, he took up lodgings at a local hotel but shortly after, he rented the famous Yellow House on Place Lamartine, nestled in between the rail tracks and river on the north side of town. This famous painting depicts his bedroom in the house.
